Above average rains in July have given us some hope of a much better year than 2024, June rainfall was also above average. Once seeding was finalised, we turned our attention back to livestock matters, though supplementary feeding continued until our supplies were almost exhausted.
Allen and Joy attended the South East Stud Merino Field Day in Keith to view what many merino studs brought as their display.
Damien and Lauren classed a flock at Peterborough SA where the ewe hoggets were by Glen Holme rams for the first time.
In the last week of the month, Allen and Joy drove through to Armidale in the New England region of NSW where they visited an Ultra-Fine Merino property to look at the ewes, rams and lambs. This was an opportunity to see how environment affects production, and how to select appropriate genetics to suit the production goals and environment. They also visited another Poll Merino stud while ewes were being crutched pre-lambing.
We had purchased two rams near Armidale in February and were anxious to bring them home for acclimatisation; in the end, we brought three rams home, two had been used in their stud of origin.
Our wool entries for the Royal Adelaide Show were delivered so that measurements could be taken.
